ABOUT THE ARTWORK

The models photographed are part of a mixed-used, conceptual project entitled ‘The Fourth Estate’. The architectural proposal comprises a collection of dwelling types including 2-3 bed cottages, flats and semi-detached homes, as well as an art gallery, small high street and dramatic swathes of layered landscapes including raised open fields, walking routes and sports pitches. The Fourth Estate is situated in a North-west suburban area of London previously referred to as 'Metro-land'. This was due to the construction of the Metropolitan Railway and the subsequent residential developments which emerged there between 1915 and 1932.

Each element of the project explores and represents the numerous contradicting components of the British suburban experience. Some of these contradictions include: natural and synthetic; individual and mass-produced; professional and amateur. Scrutinising these themes and the new narratives which can be produced from them, became the basis for a new slice of suburban development connected both to the bustling distractions of London and the escapism of nearby pockets of countryside.
